Comemoration of International Women Day 2022 by Reflecting Impacts of Climate Change

Coalition for Women Human Rights Defenders Tanzania (CWHRDs Tz) together with Gender and Climate Change Tanzania Coalition (GCCTC) commemorated the International Women Day in 15 March in Handeni Tanga Rigion by conducting a diologue on the impact of climate change and measures to be taken to address its impacts. During the day, several calls were made by various speakers for community members to collaborate to address climate change impacts to promote equitable, inclusive and a society free from gender discrimination for sustainable development. In her speech, CWHRDs-TZ Board Member, Rose Ugulumu, said the dialogue was meant to recognize the great contribution made by women and girls all over the world to address the impacts of climate change. The CWHRDs-Tz celebrates the voices of women in Tanzania and especially role models and champions of climate change impact’s mitigation and adaptation as more women and girls than men are affected, climate change impacts affect more women and girls in rural areas than in urban because they rely on farming as their main source of livelihood. In the dialogue participants mentioned some of climate change impacts which directly affect women and girls in rural areas as drought, shortage of food, water and sources of energy especially firewood and charcoal. CWHRDs-TZ member and WATED Executive Director, Maria Matui who is also a Coordinator of Gender and Climate Change Tanzania Coalition (GCCTC) said CSOs promote utilization of the existing traditional knowledge and opportunities available at the different sectors at district level to address climate change impacts to women and girls.
